You have a right to privacy.

The Law
Pursuant to California Government Code Section 6267, the Rancho Mirage Public Library keeps your registration and borrowing records confidential.  These records include the information you provided when you applied for your library card as well as the records of what you check out from the library.  Library staff may consult these records in the course of carrying out Library business, but will not disclose this information except:

  • • upon request or consent of the Library user,
  • • when providing information to the parent of a juvenile user regarding financial obligations or fines of their minor,
  • • pursuant to subpoena, court order, or required compliance with a USA Patriot Act information request.

Our Web Technology and You
When you visit our website, our software captures non-personally identifying information such as the IP address of your Internet Service Provider, the date and time you accessed our site and the Internet address of the website that may have referred you to our site, the operating system of your computer (i.e. XP, Windows 2000, etc.), the browser you use (i.e. Internet Explorer, Netscape, etc.) and your screen resolution.  We use this information to help us make sure that our website is accessible to those who use it, to help us better plan “downtime” and to give us information about which areas of our site are most—and least—used.  Our website uses “cookies” to allow access to some of our interactive features, such as our catalog or subscription databases.  These cookies do not capture any personal user information, such as your email address.

We do require personally identifying information—your library card number and PIN—for certain functions.  We obviously need that information if you want to access your account, for example, to place a hold or renew your materials.  However, once you log out of our catalog (iBistro) or leave the iBistro site, your activity will no longer be linked with your identity.   We also require your library card and PIN to ‘pass you through’ to our electronic databases, (like InfoTrac or Standard & Poors.)  As soon as our computer has confirmed you as a Rancho Mirage Public Library card holder it passes you through to our subscription vendor’s server, at which time your activity is no longer linked to your identity.
