Interior Features:
• Cork Floors
The manufacturer is Natural Cork, the style is the Edipo Series in 12-inch x 24-inch planks from Portugal. It was chosen because it is an environmental, natural material that is accoustically appropriate, durable, resilient, anti-microbial and hypoallergenic. The striations of the Edipo pattern were chosen to mimic the natural desert landscape.
• Walnut & Chestnut Woods
These woods were chosen to mimic the exterior materials: the chestnut, lighter in tone, is similar to the stucco and stone colors whereas the walnut is the accent, like the copper and dark bronze trim elements.
• Art Glass
Art glass designed by the Judson Studios in Los Angeles is a beautiful interpretation of desert colors and reinforces the lines of the building. An abstraction of the printed word in a book, the artwork is a welcoming image to all patrons.
Exterior Features:
• Copper
Copper is used on the Children's Storytime Room, the western face of the Community Room, trim details and signage.
It was chosen for its natural brown colors, a contrast between limestone, marble and stucco. It is an enduring finish
that ages by subtly changing its appearance through time.
• Stone Wall
The buff-colored vertical stonewall running east-west is Kasota Limestone from Minnesota. Three textures were used - honed, honed sandblasted, and bed face/split face. The colors reflect tones found in the tradtional desert landscape. This major stonewall is finished from very rough at the extremities to very smooth at the point of entry into the Library. This "rough to smooth" is reminiscent of naturally occurring stone near a water source or oasis. This is used as a metaphor or icon for refuge and knowledge - essential qualities of a library.
